GREETINGS
It has been a while since I have last posted, so thanks in advance. We are having some puzzling problems on a satin ebony finish for a piano. We used Sh-Wil production black lacquer. It is a nitrocellulose composition. It was thinned with their thinner retarder as well as regular lacquer thinner. After stripping the existing finish and prepping and sanding the piano it was sealed (primed) with SW primer/surfacer.These initial coats were then sanded down and about 10-20 coats were applied as needed on different parts of the piano. The finish sat for 2-3 months and then we started the wet sanding and rubout routine.
The problem is that the finish seems to have picked up ?water? stains that we cant seem to wet sand out or compound out. Some other spots also show a shinier (oily looking) surface that looks like a contaminant is seeping through the finish and showing irregular surface conditions. We have tried all the cleaners we have as well as denatured alcohol and window cleaner. These oil slick looking spots do not smear they only show in the finish. We also had no signs of fish-eye when we applied this finish.
Help please Robert Mansfield

Robert, It sounds more like a product problem. I have had a lot of problems with Sh-Wm. I will only use there clear products. I have had problems in the past with "pigment bleed through". This is caused by the wrong ingredients being used to mix your lacquer. The black lacquer is supposed to have a clear base to start with and then pigments added. Did they mix your lacquer with a white base to start? Also for future reference I would use a gloss finish if you are going to rub it out to a satin. Gloss seems to be a harder finish overall. I have finished and installed units done with Sh-Wm. product to have the same problems you describe. The problems don't show up for a while after the finish is applied. Good luck getting Sh-Wm. to help you out though.
*I've sprayed a lot of lacquer in my life (years ago) and I agree with 'Kat. I believe you got a bad batch of product. I've been out of it too long to suggest a fix other than stripping and starting over. Don't do that yet as someone else here may come to your rescue.
