Hi All, You know when you are reading a post and it includes a web site recommended by the poster ,and in the rest of the posts there may be several such web addresses, is there a way to save these in the one place, so that if you need to view one you can recall the page by just pressing some buttons.Would be glad of any help.
PS Have just signed up for a computer course which starts on Monday the 3rd wish the instructor luck. Regds. Boysie Slan Leat.

Boysie, you'd need to add it to your "Favorites" (If you use Internet Explorer to browse the internet) or Bookmark it (many other browsers, I think Firefox and Mozilla maybe?).
In Internet Explorer (IE for short), you click on Favorites up in the toolbar and select Add to Favorites. This will open up a box where in you can choose exactly where to store it, directly under Favorites, or -- if you set up different folders for different areas of interest -- under a subfolder of Favorites.
For instance, I have a whole bunch of Favorites folders, among them is Woodworking. Under Woodworking, I have yet another bunch of folders -- Tools, Forums, Adhesives, Finishing, etc., etc. So the different pages go in a category that makes them easy to find (because there are so many of them).
To make a sub-folder under Favorites, click on the New Folder button after you've clicked on Add to Favorites.
**********************************************
Once you have a page added to your favorites, if you want to navigate to it, click on Favorites and find it in the list that shows up, click on it.

Glad to help out, Boysie. Have a great time at your class (but not too great, LOL!)
Ready for today's tip? If you want to save a Link without actually going to the page, right click on it and select Add to favorites.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Girl,
Come and sort out my browser settings to allow me to post photos to Knots, would you? I spent years in computing but cannot for the life of me get the pic attachment dialogue to complete, these days. It used to work but I think some fiendish Windows update has fallen foul of prospero and its pic attachment process.
I can get to the point where the file is pointed at and made available, When I try to load I get the Windows box "You are attempting to send info over an insecure link; is this OK". I say yes then prospero fails with a "the process failed" error box. Very bloody informative, I don't think!
No matter what I change in IE5, Windows or my security software this syndrome will not go away.
Please apply your PC genius. :-)
As to Boysie, you should take FG's advice about organizing your favourites into folders with subfolders, subsubfolders, etc., each with a meaningful name. Otherwise you will soon be scrolling your tired eye down a humongous list trying to find the one little website that you want out of 478.
You better keep yer hand on yer ha'penny in that class. Them modern wimmin tek what they wants from poor little innocents like you! You may be overwhelmed with a knowledge you did not seek.
Lataxe, who preferred nice simple mainframes.
Wow, can't help you there Lataxe! My Windows updates automatically, I set my security in some kind of random process, no doubt. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't use the Windows firewall, I use BitDefender. Something in Windows had to be reset, though, to allow certain Prospero functions (making an href link, for instance). But I couldn't tell you what I did to make it work.
You might try temporarily turning off the Windows firewall when you're posting attachments, see if that works. Remember to turn it back on afterwards, though!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Squire,
I have a suggestion which may help- abandon (temporarily if you want)the tempramental Internet Exploder as your browser. Try Fire Fox.
I suggest this because, to this day, I am unable to operate my bank account if I use that I/E. The very highest computer authorities in the land, based in Wellington, were unable to remedy that , and eventually suggested "Use FF", and I have been browsing like a Giraffe ever since. Er, Giraffes are the ultimate browsers, and marvellous beasts. I am considering importing a few dozen, as these Kiwis are short of orchard workers for picking various fruits . Also, they don't bite, so would make a suitable substitute for my most sorely missed dog-Mr. Wadkin. R. Dog esquire.Philip Marcou
Hi Lataxe
Perhaps you could bypass uploading an image from your computer and, instead, copy it from another site. I store images in Photobucket, usually at about 80-90 kb in size. For most website forums I just use the URL address, but for Knots I discovered that I could copy and paste the image directly.
Here is an example. I made this saddle square today, took a photo, and uploaded it to Photobucket. If I open the image in Photobucket, right click and Copy, I can now Paste it into this message box, thus ...
View Image
Give it a go.
Regards from Perth

Lataxe,I'll second the recommendation that you give FireFox a try. However, if you are bound and determined to stick with IE, you may also try adding "forums.taunton.com" to your trusted sites. To do so, try the following:1 - Under the "Tools" menu, select "Internet Options".
2 - In the new window which opens click on the "Security" tab.
3 - In the little bar of icons immediately below the tabs, select "Trusted Sites"
4 - Click on the "Sites" button below the bar of icons
5 - Enter "forums.taunton.com" in the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, and UNCHECK "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" at the bottom of the window, then click on "OK"You may need to exit the browser and restart it before the changes will take effect. Even if this doesn't work, you will now have the opportunity to experience one of Microsoft's more entertaining, if somewhat nonsensical alerts, something to the general effect of "You are attempting to send information to a trusted site. This may expose your computer to additional risk."Best Regards,

boysie,
As an add-on to forestgirls suggestions I would also archive/save them every once in a while. If you use Internet Explorer and you upgrade/change browsers, you can usually import them back.
My bookmarks are like a library to me.

"I would also archive/save them every once in a while." Absolutely! I save mine every month or so, but I don't simply replace the file with the new "save" -- I number them, so that if my latest file is corrupted for some reason, I can at least go back to the last one.
Boysie: To save (back up) your Favorites in Internet Explorer, click on File, then Import and Export, click Next, then select Export Favorites. click Next twice in a row, it'll show a location on your computer where it's going to save them, go ahead and do that.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
BOB I've just replyed to Forest Girl, and made a suggestion about Holidays, the same applys to your good self. The two of you could make a fortune over here teaching . Of course the ould drink is very expensive, come to think of it so is everything else.
Never mind as always thanks for your help and when I become a Master of the P C I will post it on Knots for all to see. Regds. Boysie Slan Leat.I'm never always right but i'm always never wrong. Boysie
Boysie,
I think Forest Girl has covered it . If you are using FireFox as a browser then this is referred to as "Book marks".
Good luck with the course, but I think there is little substitute for being bold enough to click away without fear until things fall into place, although A good course will no doubt save you a lot of frustration.
I have had no formal instruction so far, but suspect that now would be a good time to take full advantage of what I have self taught so far and go for a course or two.
PHILIP, Having read your posts and seen your pictures on Knots, If you think you need a course bejaysus I think I'll give it up.
If your only saying this to make me feel good dont worry, I havent told the others this, The course has 19 women and only one man, I'll give you 3 guesses who he is, and he's not the instructer, If you havent figured it out yet STAY TUNED for next weeks episode of "THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN MOUSE" Poor me . Boysie:
Top of the morning to you!
In you travels over the web, you might also find content that you want to keep. Bookmarking assumes that the web site manager will keep and maintain the information you find helpful.
When I come across stuff I want to keep, I also save it as a .pdf (Adobe's portable document format). On a Mac, go to print and then select save as pdf.
In windows you can download a free utility that will permit you to accomplishe the same thing.
I have a folder full of useful woodworking things and I don't have to wory about the "url not found" message.
Hastings
