Hello, I would like to know what steps are nesessary to saw and dry me own veneer. I have some crotch stumps I would like to saw into veneer. Do I cut the logs into one inch planks, dry and then saw into veneer, or do I saw the veneer right off the log and dry? I do have a small band mill. Thaqnk you for your time.

Hi Jim,
I'm trying to find someone with the right expertise to answer your questions since it appears that no one has been able to answer it yet.
I don't have a lot of experience with this but I don't think it's a good idea to mill the log into planks before you saw your veneer. I fear that when the boards dry, they will warp or bow so much that you won't be able to get more than a single sheet of veneer from each plank.
It would seem that one approach might be to saw the logs into thick yet manageable chunks, then immediately set up your bandsaw to resaw the individual veneers. If the veneers warp or bend it won't be a big deal.
Also, after cutting the veeners, keep them packed together in the order that they were cut, and clamp the stack of veneers between two sheets of plywood to keep them flat.

Jim- I would agree with Matt's answer. That method should work well- the only thing I would add is that frquently some pare it put between each sheet of veneer (brown wrapping paper would be best)
