Schleining Essential Workbench question

I am *finally* closing in on the end of building the essential workbench (FWW #167) and have a question for those of you who have built this bench.
The end caps and apron are all 6″ wide; the front vise jaw is 6″ wide; but the end vise jaw is shown as 6 5/8″ wide (i.e., it extends 5/8″ below the end cap (which serves as the rear jaw for the end vise).
It looks in the article like the extra width is needed for the Veritas vice hardware. If that’s the case, why not have the end caps and aprons all at 6 5/8″ width to match the end vise jaw?
thanks,
Randy
