I am upgrading to a SCMS. Having a small workspace, I am looking for any ideas/pictures of rolling stands people have made. I always enjoy learning from other’s mistakes/accomplishments.Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. ktkamm

ktkamm, instead of building a cabinet, I went and bought one of the good steel tool cabinets fom Sears. It was on sale and cheaper than I could have made from decent plywood, with drawer slides and casters. The drawers are used for sawblades and other woodworking tools.

That is interesting. I have been thinking about doing the same thing, but did not take the chance, thinking that it would be noisy (rattle). What is your experience?
woodentrain, the cabinet works perfect for me. There is some rattle while rolling around the shop but not while in use.
I did put a piece of 3/4" MDF on the top of the cabinet to help isolate the saw. If you decide to get a cabinet, get the ones with the ball bearing drawer guides. The better quality guides hold the drawers better.
I bought the Sears but a friend of mine used the Husky brand from Home Depot.

Just the answer I was hoping for. I will give it a try.
Thanks!
Woody
I'm looking for a few good ideas as well. Preferably something that can integrate some dust collection.
My saw came with a sawhorse stand... It's just too big and too immobile fr my little shop.
Let me add one suggestion - if you have a work bench, considering making your rolling cart high enough that the bed of the SCMS is barely (maybe 1/8") higher than your work bench. Then you can roll the SCMS next to the work bench and have one very nice side support for anything you're cutting.

4' wide with supports in retracted position. 10' wide to tip of support extensions giving you 16' cross-cut ability. It does 12'-14' commonly as the miter sits in a forward position in my shop waiting for lumber from the mill to be down-sized. My TS is a dedicated ripper. This is my cross-cut and angle go to.
Jet base at $49 and the rest is my or others MDF scraps... Can go mobile by just a quick detachment from a DC that serves it and my router table. It will roll right out the door to cut 16' replacement flooring for my deck in a few weeks.
Hostile... Agile... Mo-bile... ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha...

Thanks for the pictures Sarge. If you have them, some close-ups of those "outriggers" would be much appreciated.ktkamm
Afternoon KT...
Here's a few pics you requested.. The OR is from a mobile Wolf-craft portable miter stand I purchased from HD several years ago on clearance for $39. The OR is welded well and the extensions are extremely stable. As a matter of fact they are more stable than any I have seen on some the the higher $$ mobile stands. But the wheels and wheel anchors on the WC were a design from h*ll in my opinion. Totally worthless, IMO. But at $39 I knew I would find a use for that battle-ship built OR up top.
The OR sits in front of the SCMS and is mounted to the base table. Then I added a ceiling over it to bring it to the same level as the saw base. It extends a total of 10' and with 3" (comfortably hanging over the tip of the OR on each side, it will accommodate 16' with ease and probably more if you pushed it. I generally purchase in an 8'-12' range from my hard-wood supplier and it fits my cross-cut needs to a tee.
Simple design... simple to make. I try to keep things as simple as possible at my shop!

Thanks for the additional info Sarge.ktkamm
Good afternoon Sarge,
Nice set-up ! Especially the out rigger supports. When I get my SCMS I was thinking of using the base from my RAS as it has good storage and is already mounted on a mobile base but I might have to rethink that after seeing your set up. Nice shop from what I can see. What are dimensions of your shop ?
Cheers,
Bruce
Evening Bruce...
Thanks for the compliment on the shop. Not big enough which is always the case regardless of how much you have to work with. ha.. ha...
The main shop is 22" x 25'... I am fortunate to have a secondary behind it (half basement) that gives an additional 25' x 29' when necessary to use it. I have another assembly table there, a wood rack and a sharpening station. I can add additional fold up assembly tables when pressed, even though the main shop proves efficient for smaller projects.
I did "have" to use it when I built 100' of custom counter for our 300,000 sq. ft. facility at work. Had furniture dollies attached in 3's with a piece of 24" wide ply screwed to the tops forming one. I did them in 12' sections and it would have been impossible to get them all in the front shop at one time. Best way to describe it is... it's there when I need it!
