When people say “Sand with a 3M Scotchbrite pad” do they mean the kind of scotchbrite pad I would use to clean a frying pan with? Or do they mean the kind of “scotchbrite” pad that I’ve seen in the sandpaper section of the Big Orange Box? I haven’t checked, but I’m assuming that a kitchen scrubbing scotchbrite is less expensive than a dedicated wood finishing scotchbrite.

Scotchbrite comes in different grades, usually identified by colour. Grey or brown are good for woodwork, especially denibbing between coats of finish. You need to find a specialist seller, possibly someone who sells supplies to auto-body refinish shops

I've used the kitchen variety to good effect. It (Scotchbrite) tends to be less aggressive than paper, especially useful when doing build coats with varnish. It provides sufficient "teeth" without removing half of the previous coat.
