i want to attach a solid wood leg to a baltic 3/4 inch table top. would a large wood screw or a large bolt hold better? thanks

More details are needed in order to give you a good answer. In general, mounting a leg directly to the table top, without any bracing, will not be strong or rigid. If you do a web search for table leg fasteners, you will find lots of methods and hardware for the purpose.
If you have to go directly to the plywood top try something like this:
