I think I need to buy a scroll saw. So what do I look for in a new one? I’ll be cutting out fairly small (2-4″ diameter), around 1/4″ thick & sort of complex inlays. What features do I need and which ones are unnecessary? I don’t mind spending a bit of money for a good tool, but don’t expect to be a real heavy user of this particular tool. Thanks.

Jim:
My DeWalt has been an absolute joy to use. Over the years I've used six different makes and the DeWalt has been the best.
It has easy blade changing and tensioning. The heavy cast table tilts and stays in place when locked. Its variable speed is sometimes handy. It rivals the +$1,000 units and sells for around $400 although I have found it on sale for $300 or so.
Now, here's what I really recommend; Flying Dutchman blades. Mike Moorlach in South Dakota sells them and is a joy to deal with; a real gentleman. Visit him at: http://mikesworkshop.com His phone number is listed at his site and he can offer suggestions on what blades you need.
Also visit Rick Hutcheson at: http://www.scrollsaws.com/ Everything you want to know about scrollsaws is on his site including reviews of Delta, Eclipse, DeWalt and Excalibar scrollsaws, various blades, tips and plans. It is a must-see site for scrollers.
Good luck!
