My Sears Craftsman 20′ scroll saw runs like a bat out of hell and the variable speed control doesn’t slow it down at all.
Is the best approach to replace the variable speed selector? I’d rather not haul it to a tool repair shop and I get the feeling that Sears will just rip me off if I take it in for repair there.

I thought craftsman was guaranteed. Can't you just take it down there and tell them it is broke, fix it. Or is that just the automotive tools. I know for a fact that you can bring in any craftsman wrench no matter what condition, even if you picked it up at some garage sale and get a new one.
Depends on how old it is. I believe they come with a one year warranty. If it's older than that, get the model number and go to the Sears Website. Follow the links to parts and see what it costs to order the switch. If it costs more than you're willing to pay, it's time to buy a new scroll saw. My guess is about $15 including shipping unless it's part of a large assembly.

Unfortunately, just bought it 15 months ago.
I can't seem to find the parts list. The model number is 21620 - which is strange because Craftsman tools usually have a 999.999999 model number format.

If the lifetime fix or replace guarantee sounds too good to be true, it's because it is.
Craftsman doesn't guarantee all their tools completely. Most of the ones that have the lifetime free replacement guarantee say so on the packaging.
For example, their electric tools often don't have the guarantee, nor the yard equipment, or vacuums, and not even all of the hand tools you would expect to have the guarantee. I've started asking before I buy the tool. Justus Koshiol
