I have an old Buck Bros. plane that has been lying around the shop for a few years and I have decided to try and change the blade so that I can use it as a scrub plane. I am a hobbyist and don’t use a scrub plane a lot and so don’t want to spend the money for a new one. Do you think this can reasonably be done. It has a rather large throat opening. What radius should I grind the iron? The iron is 2 inches wide.

Hi Frank,
I used a #5 1/4 and made my go-to scrub from it. It is a narrower plane than yours. I chose to use the same radius as Stanley and LN on their scrubs, which is a 1 1/2" radius--3" diameter circle. Laid out to meet the edges of the iron.
If I was making one from a 2", I would possibly curve it a bit more, perhaps not. It would depend on whether the radius worked without much effort.
Take care, Mike
