Interesting question. I did a Google search for 'symbolism scallop shell' and got many hits. Here's one:

Thanks Ed,
For a link to an interesting read.

You're welcome Ray.

I think its a classical motif, reflecting the Greek mythology that Aphrodite, the goddess of love, arose from the sea in a scallop shell. Today is Valentine's Day - my sweetie sent me a giant cookie baked in the shape of a heart - perhaps in the classical world, the scallop shell predated the heart shape.
Or it could be an homage to the intricate designs of nature.
See the article on shell carving at FWW #61 by Mack Headley, Jr., if you get the chance.
Hi,
As another poster has referenced the Mack Headley article in FWW, there also is a great FWW video of Mack showing how to carve a shell titled 'Carving techniques and projects'.
Is there any chance you could post a link for that? Despite considerable effort with the moronic search engine here I can't locate that video. Thanks,Cliff
Is this it?

Re the search engine the on the FWW home page works best.
