I am in the process of making a vertical A-Frame roll around accessory cart for my sliding table panel saw. It’s not meant to be pretty, just functional, so I used a combination of materials from the packing crates of recent purchases, and a lot of autobody filler to smooth things out a bit. I am painting it with several coats of what I had lying around; outdoor latex from the recent painting of my shop. I want to apply a sealer that would keep any latex from rubbing off on the accessories and to make it more durable; I was thinking of using several spray cans of Deft I have left over from another project.
My question is this, will latex paint and Deft be compatible.
At the moment it eludes me as to what Deft contains…..

Deft is a nitrocellulose product, it will contain lacquer thinner as well as other chemicals. I don't think it will bother the latex but there could be adhesion problems. I've used waterborne poly over latex for some special paint techniques. It works well to protect the paint and there are no compatibility issues.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Use shellac

I think I have some of both around. I'll do test strips on bottom as it seems based on your responses that several approaches may work fine. Thanks for the support guys...
Bio:
I have built quite a few shop cabinets from construction grade lumber and sheet goods and painted them with a latex paint. I then "sealed" them with a couple coats of hi gloss poly. They perform great. The finish is hard and durable. It took a little more time to finish i.e. prime-paint-seal with poly. But like you, I had the material left over from other projects and it was cost effecient to use. I have had no problems and plan to continue to build shop cabinets this way.
Take care-

Thank you,

Great thanks, I always have leftover poly around.
I used water based poly on some cabinet doors I painted with latex--still fine after about six years.
Great to know there's more than one way to this. Comes in handy for utility cabinetry. Thanks..
