Hello,
I have a bench top that is constructed of 3/4″ ply with 3/4 MDF on the surface. Around it, I will be banding it with 1×2 poplar which I will trim flush with the top.
I am hoping to seal the MDF and poplar at the same time. Any advice will be much appreciated. BTW, this is an assemby bench, so I am not worried about bringing out the grain, etc, just sealing it.
Thanks,
Alex

Hmm..after some more searching, it appears some have had luck with using #2 shellac on the MDF. Does this sound like the route I should think about taking?
Shellac is fine, but be prepared for the MDF to suck up the first coating like mad. Once you've got a few coats on the surface, lightly sand it and you will have a nice smooth work surface.
