Sean Hughto (Samson) Article, or Where can I find this?
Hello! I came across an article entitled ‘Making a Frame and Panel Door’ by Sean Hughto, written December, 2008. (Here: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Furniture/Making%20a%20frame%20and%20panel%20door.html] “
In this article he says he uses a “plough/grooving plane (mine happens to be a Stanley 248 A)”, then moves on to say, “I run beads, using my 66, full length on the rails:” with this picture:
Here’s where my question comes in. What exactly is this called and where could I find one? I’m doing searches, but coming up empty. I’ve been trying to make beaded inset cabinet frames by hand and innovation, but although I’ve been successful with a lot of sanding, this looks to be a much more sensible method.
Could anyone send me in the right direction here? I think an actual name of the tool would be most handy.
Thanks for helpin’ a chick out.
Christine

You don't need this tool to do what you want
You can simply grind the bead into an old plane iron or card scraper. A card scraper is easier as you can use a file, a plane iron wili require a grinder and you will have to shape the wheel with a dresser. This image is of a plane iron. you can also use a section of an old bandsaw blade mounted in a scratch stock. But the card scraper is the quick and dirty way to do it.
Oh by the way here is the tool you are looking for,

Lie Nielsen also makes one.
Good Luck

Thanks for getting back to me.
I'm going to look for the items you've mentioned and take a look at eBay.
This opens a lot of possibilities I didn't know were available.
I'm afraid I just love the beaded look!

hand beader
LN makes a modern copy of the Stanley tool and LV makes their own version of beading tools. May want to take a peak in both directions.
Stanley 66
Thanks.
I actually have that open in another window.
Gotta get a few $$ together and I'm going to pick one or the other up!
I appreciate it.
Hey CEF
I will try again. Save your limited funds for basic necessary tools. A Stanley or Lie Nielsen scratch beader is a luxury tool. In the interest of furthering the craft, E-mail me and I will send you an alternative tool.
Regards
Rob
