I recently developed a website to help market my work. I’m now in the process of trying to get a decent ranking with the top search engines. I know that the number and quality of links that go to one’s site are a major determining factor in the ranking hierarchy. So I’m trying to find people to exchange links with. Does anyone with experience in this area have any advice for me? Having talked with a couple of SEO companies, I have found out that providing reciprocal links is part of what they charge for. I’m trying to keep this fairly low cost, so I’ll do this part myself. I’ve paid for an AdWord space on Google to get some exposure in the mean time and have found the feedback they give to be very helpful. For instance you can monitor the click through rate of various keywords and as well as experimenting with different titles to the add to see which gets the best attention.

Bill, I can't remember if I've "seen" you over at WWA, but here's a link to their members page. Huge number of WWing website links there.

Try a website didicated to website design. There's a bunch of them out there worth looking at. Look up meta tags
I am a Website consultant by day. Your best bet is to have your developer (or yourself if you have done the HTML) to put in some good meta tags into your core page on your Website. Another really good technique is to use a product like Web Position Gold. We have used it for clients, but it is better if you do it yourself. You'll have to be disciplined and spend about 15-20 minutes a day, but after a few weeks, you'll see your site at the top of the heap for the words you are pushing (unless others are doing the same thing and have more conditions that search engines like).
Some conditions that influence the search engines ranking:
LINDAU Rocking Chairs
Home to Heirloom Quality Handmade Rocking Chairs and One-of-a-Kind pieces of Studio Art Furniture
Hand crafted rocking chairs are heirlooms passed down for generations. I live in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina, home to some of the finest hardwood forests on the planet where I hand craft each rocking chair with that in mind. Although I do use small amounts of ebony to provide accents to some pieces, most all of my work is done with domestic hardwoods such as Walnut, Cherry and Curly Maple. This practice is a result of the ethical dilemma surrounding the way in which many exotic woods are harvested. My chairs....
Hope that helps.

Bert,
Thanks for a VERY informative post! I have bookmarked those sites and will be doing a lot of reading. I have wanted to optimize my site to get better rankings for some time.
Michael
Bart, that's lots of good info. Thanks.

Bart,
Great post. I am revising my website and your post is one of the ones that conviced me I HAD to do it. I get a lot of traffic for a nothing site (500-750 real hits a week) but I still don't turn up in the search engines.
I have started working hard to get non reciprical inbound links and and am revising the meta tags a lot as well.
I would hire you but I can't even pay me yet! So, I thought I would at least drop a thank you note...
Michael
