I’m just beginning to set up my own shop. While I have numerous hand power tools, I’m just now beginning to purchase the larger power tools, starting with a tablesaw. I’ve done quite a bit of research, but obviously nothing beats real life experience with a product. While I’m not a fan of Sear’s Craftsman brand today like I was 20 or 30 years ago, I have preliminarily selected a Craftsman cabinet saw, model OR35504. It appears to be a sound machine and has had some decent reviews. Do any of you have any first hand information on this choice? Any information or even general advice on setting up a working wood shop would be appreciated.

I've been running my 22124 for 15 months now and am really pleased. Mine replaced a very good, and fully tricked out GI 50-185 contractor saw. By design, the 22124 just has a bunch of advantages, mass, stability, DC, etc. I agree with your assessment of the Craftsman name in general. This machine is not the swill produced by the Ryobi/Sears marriage from 1997-2004. It's built by Orion and is a great saw regardless of the name plate.
A friend of mine who'd looked at a Uni, the General 650,a nd a Griz 1023 also bought the 22124 and is really pleased....most people are.

Thanks Knotscott. Based on your information and the link you provided, it looks like Model 35504 and Model 22124 are exactly the same machines, just different model numbers based on the fact yours was purchased last year. Would you agree with that conclusion? Also, is there a way to tell if Orion makes the 35504 when I look at one at Sears? This saw is currently listing for $899 in the catalogue, $949 in the store. I'm hoping to catch a good sale on this baby and bring it home a little cheaper.
OR35504 is the mfg's number. The Sears item number is 00922124000. If you go to Sears.com and type "22124" in the search, it'll return:
"Sears item #00922124000 Mfr. model #OR35504". It'll also show that it's on sale for $899 from $999. If you could talk someone into another 10%, you'd have a fine bargain and a great saw. It might pay off to talk to more than one person or visit more than one store if you don't find someone to agree to another 10% right away. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&pid=00922124000&cat=Bench+Power+Tools&subcat=Table+Saws&vertical=TOOL&ihtoken=1
I went to two stores today and spoke with several people. Sears seems to be hard to deal with in order to get any additional discounts. The good news is I picked up the say today for $899, which I think is still a good buy for the price when compared to several other makes. I delving into the manuals tonight as I type this and am excited to get it properly set up and start spinning some dust! Thanks for the information. Oh, and you are certainly correct on the model numbers; I found that out today too. By the way, based on the saw I picked up, it appears to be made by Black and Decker and not Orion, at least that is what the external box says. It is model 22124, though.
Congrats on your new saw! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. Today's Sears flyer shows the 22124 for $799.99 today and tomorrow only. To me, it'd be worth a trip back with your receipt for a $100 price adjustment....should be pretty straight forward without hassle.
Just got back from the store after reading the 'rumor mill' and seeing the flyer today. Got a credit for $107 (includes tax), which allowed me to purchase for $799 plus tax. A good deal!
"Sears seems to be hard to deal with in order to get any additional discounts." The best deals on the ZIPcode saws reported here were, IIRC, gotten via combining discounts: 10% off if you open a charge account, holiday specials, that kind of thing. Problem is knowing when/if these offers will come again.
Congratulations!!! The B&D box is a little mystifying, but I think Orion may be making tools for some of the other companies, so who knows.....Will see if there's any info out there.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Just a heads up to anyone wanting the 22124... I purchased it online a few minutes ago for $699 (30% off). The online price is even better than the Sears newspaper ad which had it for $799. The $50 home delivery was a bargain also as it will save my back.
I was actually thinking of purchasing the 22114, but with the 30% off and all the comments here, I bit the bullet and purchased the 22124...seemed like a no brainer for $699. Now I just have to wait till next Saturday when it will be delivered.
The 30% off appears to be for all online purchases of sears tools greater than $399 and appears to expire tomorrow 9/4...
You got one heck of a deal. I know delivery is extra, but it you bought for $699, you bested what I got! Enjoy, as will I.
I just visited the Sears site, and as far as I can tell the saw is available through tomorrow for 20% off. Maybe 30% off was an earlier offer that already expired?
I just went to the Sears site and put the 22124 table saw into check out and it still showed the price of $699. Actually it indicates the "special offer (30% off)is until 9/6. The 30% doesn't show up till you start the "check out" process.

Hello - Just an FYI... I just checked the sears site and when you add the saw to your shopping cart, the price drops to $639.99.
That's a great deal. Be sure to choose the in store pickup option to avoid s/h charges.
I ordered it online and home delivery is $60. This seemed a good deal...much easier to have them deliver and move the 430 pound monster into my garage.
How did you get it down to $639? I got mine for $699. Are you a craftsman club member? I called to join a few weeks ago, but have not received membership info including a member #.
Im happy with getting it for $699, be even happier if I could have gotten it for $639.
I just called Sears to get the Price guarantee...they said they would "put in" for a $60 credit to bring my cost down to $639 (need to call back in 2 days to follow up). This deal keeps getting better.

All I did was add the item to the shopping cart, when I viewed the contents of the shopping cart the price automatically was reduced to $639.99.
Guys, when you get the saw don't destroy the shipping frame. I put a piece of ply on top , casters on the bottom and cutoffs & clamps in the middle. Now has a Woodrat on one end. Just the right height.
Tried to add a pic, but the download didn't end?

Unfortunately, my frame is slightly out of wack. One bent leg pretty bad on the bottom.
Just got my 22124 saw delivered late yesterday...yea!! Havent had a chance to unpack yet, but I did notice that the top metal frame was not connected (bolted) to the bottom metal base when it was delivered and when they were unloading it from the truck they were pushing the top of the crate pretty hard to get a handtruck under the base. Was you top connected to the base when you got yours?
Congrats on getting you saw too! When I picked mine up from the store, one of the 2 x 2 channel iron legs was bent quite a bit (looks like someone stood it on one leg when they tried to walk it from one place to another during shipment). Also, one of the connecting bolts you are talking about was missing and another one was very loose, leaving only two bolts effectively holding the top frame in place to the bottom section. However, upon unpacking and inspecting, I found no problems. One thing I have to say about this is that, in spite of the frame looseness and damage, it still protected the saw very well. I intend on pitching the frame once I get the bottom section completed unbolted and out (I'm moving across the street in another couple of weeks, and I didn't want to move the bottom section unpacked. By the way, what was stamped on the outer cardboard box of yours? My was stamped Black & Decker / Chandler. Was curious if yours was the same?
Been very busy today and have had no time to unpack (need to get my sone to come over and help me out getting it off the base). When I received mine the top frame was completly loose - no bolts holding it to the base, but no visable damage noted (yet?).
Mine has Orion / Chandler one the sticker. I understand that it is manufactured by Orion for Sears (made in China ...anything made in the ole USA today?). Not sure why yours is stamped Black & Decker - maybe Orion private labels for them also.
Bill
There's been speculation that Orion is involved with the Delta hybrids....maybe that explains why "B&D" is printed on the boxes...?
Is Orion connected to Black and Decker in any way?
Delta is now owned by B&D, so if Orion was involved with the Delta hybrids, and the Delta Industrial cabinet saw, then yes, but I don't know this to be fact....it just pops up as frequent speculation!

I think I'll post my table saw number, which has letter designators, to see if the number compares with others out there. That way, I can tell if the manufacturers are the same. All of this out of curiousity, of course. The purchase is made and I'm a happy camper!
Thanks for your heads up on use of the packing crate for the TS. If you don't mind, could you e-mail me the photo (the one you attempted to attach to your post)? You seem to have found a unique use for the crate and I would like to do the same.
Thanks!
Tried to add a pic, but the download didn't end? how big was the file??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Here's a shot with the WoodRat mounted on top.
Rumor has the 22124 on sale 9/3 thru 9/6 for $800. http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2589600&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7
I bought one this weekend for $ 699.99 ($ 745 walkout with Texas taxes).
To get that deal you have to order from the website and take advantage of the 30% off, then indicate "pick up in store" as a shipping option. I did that and received an e-mail saying my order was ready for pickup at a store very near my house. The elapsed time between order and pickup was one hour.
"I bought one this weekend for $ 699.99............" OK, we need to get a list going, set up a spreadsheet with quality factors on it, collect some data over the next year and write a review on these saws! Too funny.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Guess we can check the review part off your list! :-)

Ohhhh, that's but one man's opinion. We have a much larger sample size here, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Buy it. you are going to love it. I didn't care for sears Tablesaws until I bought the 22124 two Christmases ago. Solid saw. Quiet. The only negative I found on mine was the Beismeyer table board on the right of the saw was very poorly made and very warped. Apparently even the ones supplied with the Unisaw suffer from the same problem. I built my own and it is flat. This problem might be fixed now, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy this saw.

Someone mentioned bad Bies fences. I bought my 124 in 11/2005 and had to have 2 Bies fences sent to me before I got a good one. But they arrived quick. Both the Orion & Bies people were all over my problems.
PS I paid $725.00 for mine, so I think you're getting a good deal @ $699.00.
I dont have the cabinet model table saw but I do have the hybrid model 221140. Its solid, well built, and pretty good quality. My only issue is that its a little under powered. Run out at the arbor was only .002. Check the tightness of the motor pulley set screw when you set it up- mine was loose.
Enjoy your new saw!

Hi Keef - I've got a 22124 which has a nearly identical drive system as your 22114. With good alignment and a good 24T thin kerf blade, I can rip anything to full blade height at a reasonably fast feedrate. I use either a Leitz 24T FTG TK or a DW7124TK FTG ripper, and both just go to town on anything from hard maple, to red elm, to oak with no significant struggle. http://www.epinions.com/content_185638293124
I also purchased the sears 22124 10" cabinet saw. Its a great saw for the money. I would purchase a new miter slide the incra 1000SE is what I purchased and am very pleased with it and the saw. The fence is great too on this saw.
Good luck :)
Rich
