What secondary wood would you choose for drawers made of cherry? I don’t plan dovetails for these, but rather will use sliding dovetails to join sides to fronts. Is the primary reason for having a second kind of wood cost-savings & then also to show off dovetails?

Hi there,
The purpose for using a secondary wood is usually cost, but contrasting woods do show off your fine joinery nicely. With sliding dovetails it won’t show any joinery except at the top of the joint. I would consider quartersawn stock in soft maple or sycamore. You could use a softer wood like alder or pine, but you’ll have to be careful with softer woods when squeezing home a sliding dovetail. Happy gluing. Gary
