HI all. I’m in the process of assembling a Veritas plan traditional center trough workbench. I bought the 2 maple slabs and have milled the remaining parts with eastern maple. I’m now at the stage of installing the skirts. What I’d appreciate feedback on is the connections between the end and front/rear skirts. On one end, 4 screws are installed one above the other through the front skirt into the end skirt. This is the end that will accommodate a twin screw vise. On the other end, the same joint is facilitated with a screw on top, 2 dowels in the middle and another screw on the bottom. Why would the plan call for the dowels on one end and not the other. i.e. why not 4 screws aligned vertically? If the configuration is important, how would a ‘rookie’ woodworker come by the 1/2″ x 3″ dowels? Thanx kindly in advance. .. Ken

Since I'm not familiar with the specifics of the Veritas bench, I was hoping that someone who was would answer your question, Ken. But, no one has, so here are my thoughts. Using screws at one end, and a combinations of screws and dowels at the other seems a little strange. You may find a clue in the sequence of assembly instructions, however. For example, the dowels might provide preliminary alignment during the assembly sequence, with the subsequent screws being intended to pull the pieces of the skirt together later in the process.
As to the 3" long dowels, just buy 36" long dowels at your local Dowels-R-Us store, and cut them to length. ;-) If they are being glued, consider adding your own glue-relief grooves.
