I am a basket weaver. I weave with (acrylic) painted and raw strips of wood veneers to create intricate patterns and to introduce color into my forms. I often employ bentwood laminations to complete the rims of the baskets and I do some wood turning for the bases. After the objects are complete I wish to put a no gloss finish on the baskets. In the past I have used a satin finish polyurethane varnish applied with a brush. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions about oil finishes or has any other ideas for finishes for an object with both painted and bare wood surfaces. My expertise is in the field of textiles, I am self taught in the realm of wood working. I sure can use some advice. John.

I am unclear what you mean by "oil" finish. I think any oil finish would discolor your painted surfaces, although I suppose you could selectively apply it to the bentwood or wood strips. But then I wonder about wiping it off adequately and if it would get in crevices and get sticky. Not being able to see what you are creating makes advice difficult. Also there is always spray on finishes.
