I’ve been very fortunate over the years and have avoided any serious injury, but yesterday I managed to put a 3 1/4″ nail through the back of my right hand while using my nail gun left handed (I’m right handed). Although this looks bad, I was lucky not to have hit anything but flesh and I should recover completely. All seriousness aside, I discovered that you have to have a helper to complete the last nail during self crucifiction. Conclusion: While at the job site it is always safest to just remain inside your pickup truck with your seat belt securely fastened. If you must get out of your truck and see an old right handed carpenter operating a nail gun with his left hand, quickly return to the safety of your vehicle.

bduff,
Ouchie! Let's let this serve as a reminder to use safer activities, like writing in the mirror, to learn to work switch-handed.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery,
Ray, naturally left handed, neener, neener
Great picture! Glad your ok! about 15 years ago my boss who always rushed things was walking up a roof we were sheathing, he had his finger on the trigger and his knee hit the gun. 8d nail all the way into his knee, just the head sticking out. I gave him a cats paw and he pulled it out. I took him to the hospital and they did xrays and found it missed his knee cap and went straight down the middle of the bone coming up his leg. (femur?) No damage done, back to work in two hours. A couple years later he was rushing ot go play golf and I saw him cut his finger off on a chop saw. No golf for a while after that one!
That's one helluva photo,
That's one helluva photo, man. Over the years I've visited all kinds of iniquities to my hands, almost always the left one got the punishment because I'm right handed. So I really do sympathize, and I know that even though it seems that no major damage was done, it may never be exactly the same as it was.
I once took the end of my left pinky finger off with a biscuit jointer. The doctors fixed it back on with a nail, but it wasn't nearly as impressive as yours.
Speedy recovery - the dangers involved with woodworking. Thank goodness you will completely heal. An injury - although yours wasn't too bad and again thank goodness it wasn't - will serve as a reminder to guard against ever getting hurt again -
Feel Better !
I made a slice on my thumb with the band saw 30 years ago - no stitches - needed them but wouldn't go to the hospital - to stuborn to admit I screwed up - it healed with a big scar - but more importantly - I've never been hurt again. The injury was minor but taught me a good lesson

Ouch! Glad to hear you're otherwise OK, though.
BTW, the second nail can be done without an assistant. You just need to position a curved piece of steel to deflect the second nail into just the right spot. Billiards experience helps. ;-)
Bduffin104, glad to hear it wasn’t more serious. These things happen real fast, I lost part of my right index finger to a radial arm saw, and a minor distraction, 20 some years ago, I was lucky to not lose more, but it made me work safer. Best wishes on your recovery. garyowen

This is taking body piercing to new levels. What ornament are you going to put in the hole - a piece of chain saw blade?
Heal soon

That's going to hurt. I've found injuries like that hurt most the next day or that night. unless you have good pain killers.
I've hit my hand with my framing gun but was just a deflection off of the wood and mostly pushed my hand out of the way. Just a 1/4" in. Yours is much more impressive! You must have had your hand firmly set somehow.

Hi Papaweelie,
I couldn't help but notice your picture. and had to post this picture. Your bird friend must have stopped in Bayfield, CO also. I grew up in FC and graduated from RMHS
Is that the same species? I never did find out what kind of bird it was. Amazing!
The one I picked up had hit the window and was dazed.
I set it down and left it to recover. At leat i hope it did.
My daughter went to Rocky.
