I bought a used 15in jet planer and I am installing new blades however it did not come with the the knife setting gage. I bought a gauge at woodcraft but the jet manual does not give me the height the blades should be. how high should I adjust my blades past the cutterhead?

Did you get OEM replacement knives? If so, the manual reads like they will only fit in one way - There is also directions to make a gauge that can be used with feeler gauges to check for tolerances.
In any case I would think that setting the blades proud at least the max cut would suffice but get another opinion.
I found the manual here:
content.wmhtoolgroup.com/manuals/m_708538.pdf -
Is this the correct manual or am I chasing my tail again? The gauge was on page 12 figure 16 Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Thanks for the reply john but I believe that gauge is for seting the feed rollers and chip breaker. I have an older model that does not have the quick change blades,
thanks

If I were you, I'd simply
If I were you, I'd simply contact Jet and buy the gauge. I have the same planer, and the knives must be set to specs, or the upper serrated feed rollers will not function properly.

Thanks Jeff I'll probably
Thanks Jeff I'll probably order the gague from jet. You think they would just tell you in the manual the right height. but then people like me would'nt buy there gauge.
thanks again
The blades on a stationary planer have to be set in relation to the chipbreaker and the infeed and outfeed rollers. You should get a copy of the owners manual, it will explain how to do all the adjustments necessary for an accurate and smooth running machine.
The tip of the knives form the "cutting circle". Typically, the chipbreaker is set 0.020" below the cutting circle. You can down load the current models manual at Jet's site. It shows how to make a wooden gauge block. You could work backwards from the existing chipbreaker setting. The new model has quick change knives.
Raise the table/lower the cutting head so the gauge block just touches the chipbreaker bar. Use a 0.020" feeler gauge on top of the block to set a knife. Set your aftermarket gauge to that.
You should go through all the settings for the drive and table rollers, check that everything is parallel with the table, do the recommended lubrication, etc. If everything isn't in the correct relationship, a board could kickback. If things aren't parallel, it will cut a taper across the face of your lumber. Take your time setting up a planer, double check and check again and be careful with those sharp knives.
Thanks Hammer I did'nt think
Thanks Hammer I did'nt think about working backwards thats a good idea. I ended up ordering the gage from jet today though, it was only 13 dollars, not to bad I guess.
I need a similar gauge but for a different machine. How did you order the gauge? Did you call them, if so what is the correct number? Or is there an internet link you can give me.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Bob
I went to this site http://www.jettools.com/us/manufacturing/en/service_support/manuals.html found the manual for my machine and found the part number for gauge (back of manual. it did not have picture of gauge but had p/n at end of parts list).
Then I went to http://www.jettools.com/us/manufacturing/en/service_support/shop_parts.html
and entered the part no. and ordered it. the phone no. is
888-804-7129
Hope this helps.
Bart
