setting the knives on a 6″ AMT jointer
Does anyone have any idea how high the knives are supposed to be set on an AMT (American Machine Tool) 6″ Model 4123 jointer? The company went out of business about ten years ago.

The knives on all jointers are set level with the outfeed table.
Life is what happens to you when you're making other plans .
Does it make a difference what the outfeed table is?
I would say that you want the outfeed table about 1/8" to 3/16" higher than the cutter head before the knives are installed. If the knives are already installed measure how much they protrude from the cutter head now. Make sure that after installing the knives and you rotate the cutter head by hand that the knives do not hit the infeed or outfeed tables.

Thanks, I just replaced an old Craftsman with the unmovable outfeet table. It was a pain. With the hollow outfeet table, I never did get a good job of jointing. I now have a PM 882. Very nice jointer that still has the original knives in place. Suppose I could have measured them but you were closer.

I have this jointer about 40 years. You set the AMC the same as any other brand jointer.
Unplug the jointer, remove the 3 knives.
Clean the jibs and the locking bolts with an old tooth brush and give them a light spray of lithium grease.Lower infeed table, leave the outfeed table alone.
Put new knife in and snug the lock bolts only very slightly.
Place a piece of plate glass over the outfeed table extending an inch or two past the center .No need to find top dead center, next move eliminates it.
Now place a heavy duty magnet, two if the magnet is short, over the plate glass. You will hear the knife click as it hits the glass. If the knive doesn't move the lock bolts are too tight. Now you can snug up the locksbolts a bit tighter.Usually I tighten outside bolts first then the middle ones.Tighten a bit at a time until they are tight.Take a scrap about 1" square by 12" and place it on the outfeed table, pull the belt by hand slowly so the knife advances the stick, should move the stick very slightly, maybe from a 1/16" to 3/16".Repeat this on the other two knives. Now you can plug the machine in and try a board.
There is no need to adjust the outfeed table, unless the tables are not in plane.
I'll see if I can dig up the manual ,I'll email you a copy of pertinent info. Give me at least 2 weeks though,I won't be home til then.

Thanks so much Mike. So far this process has been trial and error, and mostly the latter.
I do appreciate this helpful nformation, and I'll get back to you if I need more instructions about this jointer - more than likely I will have more questions. Thanks for taking time to respond.
