Hi everyone. I just received my first Japanese plane, and I have lots of questions about the proper way to set it up. The blade won’t go all of the way down into the groove. I don’t know whether to remove material from the plane body, the blade, or if I should just keep tapping , and basically force it down further into its groove. Also there is quite a bit of material to remove from the blade before it will be sharp. Is it O.K. to use a motorized water grinding wheel on japanese plane irons? Should I just get an 800 grit stone and grind until it needs honing on a finer grit? I don’t know what would be the recommended way to set up my plane, but I want to do it the proper way. Please help.
