Interesting article about the workshop that builds, maintains and restores San Francisco’s cable cars. I was surprised to learn that they actually build the cable cars from the ground up here, and because of the historical landmark status they have to build the cars to the original plans dating back to 1887. “About the only things purchased off the shelf are hinges, screws and lightbulbs”

My grandfather was a 'cabinet maker' as he called it. He worked for the Chicago Transit that maintained all the old style wooden street cars. That man could make anything out of wood and took pride in what he did.
