I want to make some Shaker inspired kitchen cabinets. I plan to make the doors flush (as opposed to overlays.) I am trying to work out what hardware will be needed.
I am well aware of the traditional mushroom shaker knobs. I am assuming that the hinges should be a decorative mortised non-self-closing butt hinge. I was wondering if there was traditionally a door catch mechanism in Shaker cabinetry. Should I use a magnetic catch?

Your call
I see you're not getting much response here, maybe 'cause it's hard to say where "Shaker inspired" leaves off and your own taste takes over. I've seen lots of Shaker cabinets with simple button-type latches on the face; you turn the button 90° to release the door. There are also quite a few Shaker originals with simple locks mortised into the doors. But if you want to opt for magnetic catches, it's your call. Have a look at John Kassay's classic "The Book of Shaker Furniture" if you haven't already.
