Hello
I am looking to build a shaker style writing table for kids. Will be my first project of this type. I have 5/4 stock which i will mill to 1″ thickness for aprons. It is 3 1/4″ in width. For the front i will want a drawer (just deep enough to house a notebook computer) 2-2 1/4″ in depth. My dilemna is there will be no top rail above drawer. What ties this together? Need some advice on this type of construction. Not visualizing it. Table will be appx. 32″ wide. A link with a drawing would be great if possible.
Thanks

h mike, the 3 1/4" apron is
hi mike,
the 3 1/4" apron is cut away to accommodate the drawer. the cut out piece is used as the drawer front. left and right of the drawer opening are return parts that connect at the rear apron. these returns may be used in many different ways as drawer guides or drawer guide supports and, as they connect at the front and rear, lend support to the structure of the apron.
hope this is clear.

eef,
If i understand correctly there would be two of these support guided on either side of drawer? How would they joint to front and rear aprons, tenons?
Thanks
hey mike, tenons would work
hey mike,
tenons would work but that might require all being assembled at the same time. one way that has worked for me is to attach a piece of wood to the ends of both returns. this forms a "L" shape at each end of the returns. i fasten these small returns with screws to the apron. if done correctly one ends up with two square, flat surfaces that can be configured in many different ways for the guidance of drawers.

Without top and bottom drawer dividers the front legs won't be able to stand up to lateral forces very well. Guides/kickers running parallel to the side aprons will not help resist lateral forces, I don't think. Kids can be hard on furniture.
