I would like to start grinding my own profile tools for my 3 hp. shaper. Prefer some sort of lock edge tooling to keep the tools from coming out of the head. What is the best insert type head to purchase that would allow special tooling profiles? David Turner

This is what was the standard when I first got in the business years ago. You don't see them around as much but they still make them. You really need a profile grinder to do it affordably. The Viel runs around $700. Haven't heard much about the quality of it. Anything else new is a few grand at least. You might be able to find something used. Currugated heads are the standard today. You would grind the knives in the head for best results.

The shaper is the cheap part. It's the tooling that adds up.
You are aware that there is a compensation angle to figure out the right way to grind a profile due to the angle the knife comes out the head?
