Are you talking about a shaper, or a router table. One's a motor and spindle, the other has a router mounted under it. I've never heard a shaper called a shaper table before.
Here's a pic of each, let us know.

I know the difference, thanks, and it was a shaper I was asking about ... I found a 2 hp one that I've decided to buy.

What do other people recommend for a home shop? I would like to buy something decent that will last for years.

Stay away from 1/2" arbor. Save up for something larger. You will appreciate it when you can hog of alot of material in one pass. Used cutters in larger arbor sizes are also more readily avaialable.
