I just bought a set of Shapton Glass Stones 1000,4000, and 8000. I read that you don’t have to soak the stones and that soaking them is bad for the stones. On the Shapton website it states you should soak the stones for 5 minutes before first use, then just lightly spray them with water before each use. What do you do?

Just use a spray bottle to wet the surface, as long as the water does not soak into the stones there is no need to submerge them prior to use.
I have the same setup. I did the 5 min soak first time and then lightly spray before each use thereafter. Worked fine. I really like how these stones sharpen A2 steel.
I liked my Norton water stones but love my Shaptons. JusI followed the script and soaked for a few minutes but now just spritz and use. I don't know if I'm a sucker for the placebo effect, but the 16000 but sure seems to make a difference on both A2 and O1.
