I was watching some videos about preparing new Japanese chisels when I saw a presenter on youtube rub what looks like a block of chalk along one edge of the water stone. It looks like a variation of the ruler trick. It’s at the 4:50 mark of the video.

It might be a Nagura-a stone that is rubbed on the waterstone to create an abrasive slurry
Pretty sure its a method people who are concerned with the ura losing its shape use to make the edge of the stone non abrasive. I forget what people use, but glue sticks come to mind. Might be making the glue stick part up.
Yes. The video even states: “it is to clog the stone”. Odd though in that the sharp end of the chisel is not on the clogged area. I honestly don’t get it.

While I need to research this some more it appears it is Ibota wax I'm going to look into this some more when I have some time tonight or later in the week.
I have learned little about ibota wax. Only that it is made from cicada secretions and I cannot find anywhere in the US that sells it.
