I’m using the sandpaper/glass approach to sharpening my chisels/blades, with very good success, but I read somewhere that the Japanese chisels (Matsumura) — while very high quality — couldn’t be sharpened with this method. What could possibly be the reason?
Thanks,

Although I use waterstones I know several people who use sandpaper for these chisels and they seem to have no problems, maybe the person who said not to use sandpaper wanted to sell waterstones:) Anyway give it a try and if it works for you great if not try waterstones.
