I have a 20″ powermatic planer and am looking for the best way to sharpen the 3 blades.
My thinking was to buying 4 sets and have them constantly in rotation and having a local company sharpen them.
The other option is to get some sort of sharpening machine for it. I didnt really find anything that would do a good job on a 20″ planer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please excuse my ignorance, I am young and new to the game!

Install a shellix head and then you can buy inserts and never have to have your knives sharpened again.
Thanks (for some reason I had to create a new account.)
I herd that the Shelix head saves time and is really quiet. How about the cost of the incerts compared to sharpining blades? It sounds like a good investment but we do a lot of milling reclaimed lumber. How screwed are you if you hit a nail? We use a metal decector but thats not always 100%
I don't know what model you have
but if it is one of the older ones you may be able to find a sharpening attachment that mounts to the machine this will grind and joint the blades in the head. I found all the peices for mine on Ebay. This is the best way to resharpen as they will be jointed as well, impossible if the knives are removed. Be advised, you will need the Grinding bar that attaches to the machine, the grinding motor assembly, the jointing assembly, and an indexing pin that will bolt on next to the drive pully.
The Shelix is also not a bad alternative as mentioned above.
Terminix also made a disposable blade/cutterhead for these machines.

Thanks Rob!
I have a new powermatic 209-1. I dont think it has any area to attach a grinder like our old planer did.
I am looking into the Shelix for the planer. However I am worried about hitting a deep nail by accident.
