To those of you who utilize a honing guide. How do you ease the corners or introduce camber on plane irons? I find that srtaight across irons are fine on block planes and jointer planes, but on smoothing planes leave undesirable tracks.

Hang all the blade but one corner off the stone and run it for about fifteen strokes on a fine stone. Of course, do both corners.

By applying pressure on the corner with your pointer finger, you will be able to achieve the slightest camber for smoothers. Don't forget to do this every time you sharpen. Running just the corners over your sharpening media carries the risk of creating a "bump" in the edge, which will also leave that undesired line you're trying to get rid of in the first place.

Jeff got it.Running off the stone is asking for trouble. If you keep in mind that the main pressure is focussed on the tool rather than the guide it is easy to crown a blade- this one reason why I have belaboured this point before.Philip Marcou
