Sharpening Router Bits / TS Blades
How much does it cost to have a carbide router bit sharpened? –a 10″ cabinet saw blade? I’ve run enough board feet through my bits & blades now to definitely see that some are getting dull. My TS blades were expensive enough that I’m sure it will be worth sending them out for sharpening, and some of my router bits were pretty expensive also (Whiteside; CMT). But some of my router bits, especially those I bought early on, weren’t all that expensive (“Viper” bits from HD; a few Rockler “house” bits). Are these worth sharpening?
A related question: what’s a reliable place to get sharpening done? There are no local sources (Longmont, CO) that I’ve been able to find.
Thanks!

Just one comment on sharpening table saw blades. I went to a "very reputable place" and was quite disappointed. Perhaps it was partly my fault for not knowing better but I'm not even certain I got the same blade back. Make sure that you engrave your initials in your blade. They will probably dunk it in a solution to clean it and this takes the labelling off of many blades (especially Freud) so initials are the only way you will be certain you are getting back your blade. The place I went to actually scratched out somebody else's initials but they said they put them there by mistake. Needless to say, when next I need to sharpen blades I will go elsewhere and I will put my initials on the blade. I will also check it out closely to make sure that I know what if anything is wrong with it. They welded on two carbide teeth. I didn't recall any missing however that was my "learning blade" and I really didn't look that closely at it so how could I complain? In the end though, the price was fair and the blade was sharp so it is worthwhile to get them sharpened. Just be sure to look closely at it first, and put on your initials and you should do fine.

Glen,
I don't know the vintage of your Freud blades but now we laser etch a unique serial number as well as the model number and date of manufacture on all our blades. HTH.

Freud, Inc.
It is around five or six years old. I'll look for that the next time I'm in the market for a new blade.
Mark, Forrest sharpens saw blades and router bits. Check out their prices on their web site http://www.forrestblades.com. A ten inch 62-80 tooth blade costs $25 and a two flute router bit is $6.50 with discounts on batch sharpenings.
Mark : You can check out this web site for sharpening..

i own a sharpening shop. As a general rule I sharpen saw blades for $8.00 plus ten cents per tooth. Add $2.50 for triple chips. Router bits are $4.00 and up, depends on the number of flutes, shape, etc. but most are about $5.00
If your order exceeds $75.00 I will pay return shipping.
I realize this is not the classified but I hope it gives you some guidance.

MarkH:
Check with some local woodworkers or trim carpenters about where they take their baldes to get sharpened. That's how I found the place I get mine done here in Asheville, NC (United Saw & Tool for anybody out there close enough to care) They do a great job, no worries about missing or wrong blades and they are knowledeable and friendly enough to help you and answer questions about bits and blades they've seen and seem worth buying. I have heard about the sharpening that Forrest offers for their baldes but since my place charges about $10 for the same size blade, I'll stick with them.
Hopefully someone from your area will see your post and tip you off to a good place.

Mark,I charge $.30 a tooth for ATB blades and $4.50 for a two flute carbide router bit.And I guarentee that the blade goes back to the person that brought it in. Max

And . . . He's got a dandy tool for setting the teeth on old HSS TS blades ;-P

Mark,
I'm in your area and I take mine to the Woodcraft store in Denver. They send them out somewhere local but I've had really good luck with them. Their prices are competitive with what I've seen in this forum. I do have a Forrest blade that I will probably send back to Forrest when it's ready to be sharpened.
