I’m building a built in shelving unit. I want to make the shelf spacing adjustable. I’m looking for standards that aren’t the usual slotted metal strips or series of holes. Any ideas?

One common method is to drill a series of holes in a 1/2" x 2", rip it in half through the holes. One piece goes on the back, one on the front. A cleat is shaped on the ends to fit the half holes. This can also be done with notches. The cleats have to fit fairly tight to keep them from falling out. Shelves have to notched around the standards.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
There's one system that the strip is only as wide as a saw kerf. The standard fits in there and a narrow clip hooks in.Rockler or Woodcraft has them in the catalog.
G,
I saw that thin standard in Rockler and was ready to order them online when I read the words "made of sturdy plastic" Have you seen those that are made of metal?
