Shelix cutter head for Powermatic 209
Folks,
I have received a Shelix cutter head from Byrd for my Powermatic 209 20″ planer. Has anyone out there had any experience with the swap? I’d appreciate any scoop about what to expect.
Thanks,
TXJack

Shelix Head for 209
I received the following document about installing the cutterhead on on 209. I plan to install one on my Powermatic 209 but have not done so yet.
Keep me posted on how it goes.
My experience swapping head on a PW209
Hi,
Just FYI, I went through this process with a Powermatic 209 that's about 2-3 years old (5HP / 3phase). I guess PW must have changed something in building these machines cause mine had a lip in the casting behind the gear-side bearing which prevented it from moving in both directions. So when I came to step 21 and starting banging away on the replacement m6 screw, nothing happened, cause it can't go in that direction. Spent a few hours trying to get it out, including crushing the old bearing with a tool to remove axels from cars, before realizing there was a lip there. Fortunately, I didn't mess up the casting. I was able to get the cutter head out but had to bang the bearing out the opposite direction. During this time, I made a couple calls to the PW tech people and checked the parts diagram and there was no mention of this change. Other than this one problem, I found this pdf pretty accurate, though not sure why the tech guy didn't mention anything (he did recommend this pdf). Anyway, now it works great and is a great upgrade.
