I want to make small quantities of shellac from time to time using shellac flakes. Lets say I only want to make about a half pint (8 oz.). What is the formula or how do you determine the quantites of each to mix together to make say a: 1) 1# cut, 2) 2# cut, etc. and are the proportions of each measured by weight or volume?

A 1# cut of shellac is 1 pound of flakes mixed with 1 gallon of alcohol. For 1/2 gallon of alcohol use 1/2 pound of flakes. For a quart of alcohol use 1/4 pound of flakes. For a pint of alcohol use 1/8 pound of flakes. For a cup (8 oz) of alcohol use 1/16 pound of flakes.
For a 2# cut, double the flakes.
For a 3# cut, triple the flakes.

Re:L shellac mixture: Thanks, makes sense.

I usually smash up the flakes I think I might use, put them in a cup or mason jar, and mark a line about twice as high up as the flakes are. Fill to the line with alcohol. It seems to make about a two pound cut.
