I have a quart of dewaxed shellac that I bought 3 years ago and just opened now. Stirs fine and looks like it dries ok. Would you still use it and if so, how long would you continue to keep now that it is opened. Thanks for your help.

Sure I'd use it. I've hard people say it goes bad, but IME it keeps a long time in a well sealed jar. I've used it several years later, add a little alchohol.
Do three coats, an hour or two apart. It should dry hard. It it's at all tacky, dump it. It's not worth screwing up your hard work for a few dollars inbad finish.
