Hello all,
I’m currently building a bookcase out of yellow pine that has not been kiln dried. I’m planning on using shellac as a finish. I’m thinking that the pitch within the wood may likely ooze out as the MC is at 10%, with dry indoor heat come winter I’m sure the MC will drop to about 6%.
Do you think the shellac will keep the pitch from oozing out?
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks.

As I remember, it is recommended procedure to seal knots in pitchy lumber with shellac before painting to keep them from bleeding through. Though I'm no expert, I suspect that it is because shellac is not affected by turpentine in the pitch.
Short of getting the wood kiln dried, shellac is the best way to seal in the pitch.
Shellac will seal a piece of moderately resinous wood well enough to allow a finish to adhere, but a thin shellac film will not prevent bubbles of liquid resin from coming to the surface and, so far as I know, nothing will.
