I’m building another of Norm’s wall clocks, this one using rift cut oak. I want to finish it with garnet shellac and have bought the flakes to make it. I want to use a wipe on finish. Should I use a 2, 3, or 4 pound cut? I planned on putting on a coat of wipe on Minwax but found another discussion saying not to. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.
I haven’t been on Knots for a long time. Seems to have been some changes.

I like padding with about 1 1/2 pound cut. It's not a critical measurement. The key is moving quickly and NEVER going back to touch up a spot that is still not fully dry.
And a drop of linseed oil or mineral oil on the pad lubricates the process and makes the application go much easier. The oil won't show at all and adds none of its own quality to the surface.
