Liquid shellac is frowned upon by the airlines in checked bags.. How about flakes? are they flammable. I’d like to get some while in the US and put them in a checked bag.

I have attached an MSDS for blonde shellac.
There are no DOT restrictions on it's transport.
I would be certain that the flakes are in a clearly labled package, from a manufacturer, and if possible get the MSDS sheet from that manufacturer, and tape it to the package. Just in case that your baggage gets inspected. The inspectors aren't terribly well trained, and I could easily see them going inot a panic mode at an "unkown" powder found in your baggage.
Just don't pregrind them in a
Just don't pregrind them in a coffee grinder, The white powder may not go over will at inspections.
Jigs is right--most of the MSDS I looked at declare no DOT restrictions. However, there is at least one MSDS (the one I happened upon is that published by Rockler) called it an ORM-D transportation risk, which is a bit more iffy. (These are consumer packaged items of materials that other wise might be hazardous, such as a small bottle of nail polish.) I can't imagine why that MSDS differed, since the dry flakes can hardly be hazardous. They might burn if brought to high temperatures--though that would mean just about all the luggagge compartment would be in flames, and I suppose you could have a problem if you industriously ground the flakes into a powder and pumped it to an explosive concentration in the air--like flour in a poorly run mill.
Thanks guys; if I have any transportation problems with shellac flakes I'll post the results here.
Just a question.. Why not just purchase where you live?
Since her home is given as Netherland Antilles I'd guess the market may be pretty thin, especially if she hails from any other island than Curacao. We get folks from just about everywhere on this forum.
Will, there is no shellac on the island.
