I opened a 5-year old, sealed container of super blonde shellac flakes and mixed it with alcohol. I measured by proportion, not weight, and may have added more than a 2 lb. cut. After three days, inside the house, the shellac looks slightly glutinous.
Could I have added so many shellac flakes that I super saturated the alcohol? Or, are the flakes no good? Or, should I strain and use?
I tried the shellac out on a sample piece and it dried well.
Thanks,
Chris

How old was the denatured alcohol that you used. If over one year old replace and try again.

The alcohol was purchased same day at Home Depot. I did not check the date but would expect with the turnover at Home Depot that it's ok.
I also made up a batch of garnet shellac at the same time with same vintage flakes and it looks great.
Still confused.

Thanks - that answers my question and provides me with a really good reference site.
Thanks for the referance. Great website.
siala,
I've had the same problem, with the superblonde flakes. The bleached flakes have a limited shelf life. Pitch 'em.

Thanks for the input. This is the first time for me - I'll pitch them!
