Please Help! About 10 Years ago I finished a kitchen cabinet with about 3-4 coats of Shellac. I used Blonde shellac flakes and mixed them to about 2 lbs. No wrinkles and all is fine. There is no problem with that set. It is on the opposite side of the stove. But now I have to make some more cabinets to go in the same Kitchen, (over the Stove and Sink) Because of the Heat from the stove I would like to use some other finish then Shellac. I am afraid that the heat and shellac will cause trouble. Now I have two questions? 1,) What kind of finish for the new cabinets ? 2.) And how to apply it over the older cabinets with the shellac base? Thank you , Hilmar

shellac alone is not the best finish in a kitchen area - although years ago many kitchens had birch cabinets with orange shellac finish.
I would not be worried about the heat. Cabinets are not close enough to the heat where you would have a problem.
You used the shellac already and it worked OK - use it again.

The finish will hold up - it's not like the flame will hit the wood? You do have a hood and exaust - yes ?
I had shellac finished cabinets in our kitchen up until a few years ago and they held up good - with lots of grilling, baking, etc.
