I am building some cherry bookshelves for an attorney’s office. I need to match some existing furniture, so I will be staining everything. I will use an oil base stain, probably Old Masters or Minwax.
Since it is getting colder (30’s and 40’s in the overnight) and drying time is becoming an issue, I am thinking about using shellac for my topcoats. Are there any compatibility issues with the oil based stains that I need to worry about? I have used shellac before, but never on a project of this scale. Any advice, tips, and recommendations will be appreciated.
Thank You
Kyle

Spraygun, baby!
If the oils dry, let the mist fly!
Okay, I'm done. Time for medication again. But I'm serious about the gun. Don't do this in a basement with the furnace running, though. Shellac sprays good, but watch it on your vertical surfaces. Fast drying or not, alcohol is about as viscous as it gets, and you can get runs in a hurry. Light coats all around. The upshot is by the time you get to one end, the other is dry, and you can put multiples on in short order. Dunno where youre doing the spraying thats 40 degrees but if it's an unheated shop or something, kick on a torpedo heater to get things up to snuff, then kill the flame and spray after the nose quits glowing.
