I have an oak piece of furniture that I sanded and primed 2 years ago and am just getting around to thinking about painting it. In that time, the gold tones of the oak (the resins?) have bled through some of the primer which mean that it will eventually bleed through paint. Is there any reason I can’t shellac over primer to prevent this? I’ve shellaced plenty of painted pieces before painting and it’s always worked. Thanks.

Shellac will stick to most anything
So it should work just fine, it will also block the stain. Be sure to use a dewaxed shellac for this. It's best to mix your own with fresh flakes but Zinssers seal coat is a dewaxed 2 lb cut which will work fine. If you are going to pant then, Zinsser also makes a shellac based white primer which would be better yet, sands like a dream.
I think it's called B-I-N
good luck
Rob
