Has anyone tried filling the pores of mahogany by mixing shellac and sawdust? This was recommended by a friend, but I’m skeptical b/c I’ve never heard of it elsewhere. I wonder how long it would stay workable, as shellac would dry pretty fast.
I’m thinking of giving this a shot as the only paste wood filler I can find is Bartley’s, which I can’t tell to be oil or water based. Can you shellac over both oil- and water- based fillers?
Any recommendations are much appreciated!

The Bartley's is oil based. But shellac will go over either oil based or water based pore filler. I've tended to use the Behlen's Pore-O-Pack, which is also oil based, but I have heard good things about the Bartley's.
Thanks guys; I'll give the Bartley's a shot.
"It's a traditional spirits-based material ..." [from the description at Highland]. This tells you that's it's oil based. The other way to tell is by what the clean-up instructions are, just like with paint -- whether they say to clean up with water, or with mineral spirits/paint thinner.
