I’m spraying Zinsser seal coat (2 pound cut, dewaxed shellac) using a Devilbiss HVLP conversion gun. I’m getting pretty good results, but I haven’t been able to acheive that “wet” look. I’m using a 1.2mm tip and I have the fan pattern adjusted to about 3″; the thing I’m spraying is only about 2-1/2″ wide. I have the pressure fairly low at 25lbs. I seem to be getting good atomization, but I still get juuuuust the faintest amount of orange peel. When I spray, I’m having trouble getting the entire surface wet at once. Keep in mind, the entire surface (a banjo headstock) is only about 2-1/2″ by 4″. What should my next step be? Increase material feed? more pressure? get closer? bigger tip? heavier shellac cut? lighter shellac cut?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Spraying Shellac - Slow Down the Drying
When spraying, I add about a tablespoon of REAL Turpentine to a pint of Sealcoat or shellac. It slows down the drying process, gives me a wet edge, and provides some time to level out which might reduce the orange peel. Be careful, it could run if you try to put on a heavy coat, because its so much less viscous than vanish or lacquer.
This an old trick given to me from a expert finisher, I think it was Jeff Jewitt. Thanks, Jeff
