Been MIA for a few months – day job, planning to rebuild the house and shop … winter!
Just bought a still-wrapped Shepherd 4.5 Smoother kit plus adjuster on The Bay (having missed one a few months ago, and kicking myself since), and wonder if there’s any more of these things out there in woodworker/toolmaker land?
I’d love to find a long jointer!

I'd say keep searching with the methods you have been. Since the company is went out of business, I'd say they may be collectors items one day!!!
I will, and have been!I've also been talking to an about-to-retire metalworker about fabricating the metal parts of infill planes, and we may use the Shepherd parts as a template - and eventually offer partial kitsets for sale. No intention to be son of Shepherd (or even ghost of Holtey), but I do think there's likely to be a market for the metal components of a dovetail infill. We'll see - lots of other projects to complete first!CheersMalcolmhttp://www.macpherson.co.nz
This reminds me of the number 4's I have seen infilled. Anyone have more info on that? I can use my craftsman number 4(just needed an excuse to get an old stanley anyways.)

Got any photos of infilled No4s? Anyone else? Derek?Malcolmhttp://www.macpherson.co.nz
Hi Malcolm
Just don't laugh! I made this #4 infill several years ago. Jarrah infill and brass lever cap. Bed at 55 degrees. 1/8" thick LN blade and 1/8" thick Mathieson cap iron. Minute mouth. It works fantastically, taking fine shavings on really interlinked wood.

This picture was taken on a scanner all those years ago. I will try and get one with a different angle.

There you are Mate!
I knew I'd seen one - Derek posted this plane a while ago, somewhere.
Any others?
Any Shepherds?

That's the one I've seen. I think it might be his display picture on the ubeaut woodworking forum based in Australia.

Shepherd kits have been trickling onto the market very slowly since the firm closed down. I look everywhere I can, and have seen 2 or 3 on the international/online market this (2006) year.Hard to know what sort of medium-term value these kits will have. The one I just bought was above sticker price, and there are a couple of others in or near the market which will also be interesting to watch. The point is that the Shepherd guys had the product aced. The last few batches they sold were very good - beautifully-machined wood, nice crisp metal-work, very good turning (including square-turned screws to die for) and they will inevitably be highly collectable - in kit form or assembled. When will their value peak (in other words, do you hold or fold)? Who knows.Malcolmhttp://www.macpherson.co.nz
DamnLost a late model handled mitre plane a week ago on the Bay! Sniped at the last minute by a Pom! No point complaining of course - the antidote to sniping is to set your max bid and take the medicine - win or lose. I should have been less smart, and set a higher maximum.Any more, any one?Malcolmhttp://www.macpherson.co.nz
Hi Malcolm
I was watching that one as well. It was the prettiest of the bunch, in my opinion. I loved the line of the tote.
Are you going to produce copies of the Shepherd kits for sale? If so, any idea of a price?
Regards from Perth
Derek
Hesitant to use the word 'copy', Derek.
The idea is vapour-ware at the moment, and I couldn't ever see me producing a kit. There is probably a small market for the key metal components, if nicely machined.
My about-to-retire machinist aquaintance (setting up a cool home shop with traditional big iron) and I may play around with this idea in 2007.
I have to rebuild my own shop first!

I too was following that auction. In fact I think I put in the first bid for $50.00. Shows the limits of my budget:-) Too much college tuition draining the accounts right now. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I was sorry to see you lost it.

Thanks Chuck
I'm expecting the one I did win to arrive this week.

Hi Malcom
It is likely to be the fastest ever that a Shepherd plane was delvered after purchase! :)

Ha! Very dry.
I feel for the Shepherd guys tho. They had a great product, and they had heart - and, as we say, skin in the game.
