What species, and how wide are the boards? Is the stock flatsawn, or quartersawn?
Jeff
poplar 5 in. wide and flatsawnthanks
Sound advice here already.
Jeff
If you are building in the summer with relatively higher humidity, the boards will be at their widest, and will contract in other seasons. If you leave 1/16 inch or so, the gaps will enlarge to 1/8 or so in the winter. THe overlap has to be wide enough that gaps don't appear.

thanks a lot
uax,
A nice way to conceal the cracks, is to run a small (1/4") bead along the edge of the rabbet, so the crack matches, more or less, the quirk on the "stuck" side of the bead.

thanks, that's a great idea. bill
And you might want to pre-finish the boards before you assemble the back ...
