Just finished a pie safe for my daughter in Maine. I’m in Charlotte NC. About 4 ½’ tall, 34” wide, 13 deep, pine. Needless to say, I need a *cheap/safe* way to ship it. Thanks, hive…

I think you won't find both. It will probably require either UPS ground freight. You might want to consider a palette and a building a crate for it, but that would add to the shipping cost. I'm sure a good UPS dealer could advise you. If you choose another freight company I would definitely consider a crate. Most woodworkers don't have the means to package such a piece to withstand the rigors of freight handling.
If you have a pickup truck, it might be cheaper to drive it up.
Crate it, take it to a common carrier and ship it. I do it all the time.
Would not a common carrier require his daughter to pick the piece up?
Some do some don’t. The last piece I shipped was from Indianaplis to Anchorage, it got there in 10 days. A combination of truck and boat. R+L Carriers. When it arrived at the freight terminal in Anchorage they delivered it to my clients home. Most crates require lift gate service if it’s heavy.
Yes, there is every variation. You definitely need a crate. You can bring it to the terminal yourself, or have them pick it up for more money. On the receiving end they can pick it up at the terminal, or have it delivered for more money. If it's near a sizable city, it's a lot cheaper than if it's a long way from a city. Powered liftgate delivery is usually more money than a loading dock delivery.
LTL (Less than load) shipments need to be on a pallet. They use a forklift for moving things. I would want to tie it down and build a crate around it. Could be just slates but it would need protection.
For best rates I use Freightquote.com. You get prices from several carriers. I don't ship a lot but that is who I use.
Not UPS!!
Nope. Nope. Never.
Thanks for all the answers, I’m still sorting it out, but a trip to Maine this summer, Covid willing, is in consideration...
Maybe, by early July, Lie Nielsen will be open, and having their annual Open House and Lobster Bake. That's worth the trip alone.
consider a blanket wrap service. You can find someone on Uship.com I ship furniture from florida to all parts of the country. Handled by 1 drive, never leaves the truck until its there. Cant beat it!
